Historic Environment Scotland
Historic Environment Scotland safeguards the nation’s historic environment and promotes its understanding and enjoyment on behalf of Scottish Ministers. The Policy grounds are currently in the ownership of Historic Environment Scotland and they are one of the key partners in the Joint Vision for Mavisbank’s future.
Mavisbank is recorded as a Category A Listed Building by Historic Scotland. Historic Environment Scotland produced the Mavisbank Policies Designed Landscape Conservation Management Plan. Canmore, the online database, includes an excellent section on Mavisbank.
The Landmark Trust
The Landmark Trust is one of Britain’s leading building conservation charities. With the help of individual supporters and grant-making bodies, it saves historic buildings in danger of being lost forever.
Midlothian Council
Mavisbank House and Polices lie within the Midlothian Council Area. Midlothian Council were one of the key partners in the 2012-14 Joint Vision for Mavisbank’s future, and are supporting the 2021 bid.
Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust
ELGT is dedicated to improving the quality of life for our communities by re-connecting people with their local green spaces. ELGT are one of the key partners in the Joint Vision for Mavisbank’s future.
Simpson & Brown

Europa Nostra
In 2016, Mavisbank House was the only UK building included in Europa Nostra's list of 14 monuments and sites shortlisted for ‘The 7 Most Endangered’ programme by an international panel of experts in various fields, underlining its national and international significance and it perilous condition.
World Monument Trust
In 2008, Mavisbank House was listed in the World Monuments Watch List.
Penicuik House
Penicuik House was the Seat of the Clerk family, including Sir John Clerk, 2nd Baronet, who built Mavisbank. Situated near Penicuik, it is being consolidated and repaired by the Penicuik House Project.
Mavisbank: "Repeats its love"
One of Mavisbank's former trustees, Peter Gordon, has written a book about the history of Mavisbank, reflecting not on only on its cultural history within the context of the Scottish Enlightenment, but also on its many phases since, including its fascinating history as an asylum and the story of its decline.
